SUPERSONIC
GUIDED BY MUSIC
SUPERSONIC
9 Rue Biscornet, 75012 Paris

IF YOU NEED PROOF THAT ROCK MUSIC IS ALIVE AND KICKING IN PARIS, HEAD TO LA RUE BISCORNET, A NARROW LANE BETWEEN THE 11TH AND 12TH ARRONDISSEMENTS, WHERE YOU’LL FIND SUPERSONIC, A LIVE MUSIC VENUE KEEPING THE SPIRIT OF ROCK ’N’ ROLL VERY MUCH ALIVE AND NURTURING THE LOCAL ROCK SCENE. HERE, ON ANY GIVEN TUESDAY NIGHT, YOU’LL FIND OVER 250 BODIES DANCING LIKE THERE IS NO TOMORROW TO THE RHYTHM OF ROMANTIC GARAGE-POP ANTHEMS BY THE LIKES OF WILD FOX.

Formerly known as OPA, Supersonic reinvented itself in 2016 with a new team and new core principles – consistency, sincerity and collegiality – and the venue is dedicated to managing the space like a family-run business, although this is a family in which the members have been individually selected. Aurélien, Cécilia and Tiffany run the show here, and while Cécilia and Tiffany mostly manage its communications, they take part in the venue’s programming as well. Over staff dinners they discuss their individual ideas and plan the schedule together, and every suggestion is of equal importance. It’s this healthy teamwork and dialogue that have helped the venue build success, and it shows.

Marshall Backstage - Supersonic, Paris

In a beautiful industrial setting with a mezzanine overlooking the dance floor, Supersonic manages to balance an unadorned style with a light sense of luxury. With just enough grit for it to feel genuine, the space is a real playground for performers. Legend has it that one day Didier Wampas from the band Les Wampas climbed the mezzanine just to jump into the crowd. It’s insane moments like these, combined with its sense of artistic freedom and community, which make up the true DNA of Supersonic.

Every weeknight, the venue invites two or three local bands and one international group to perform, and entry is free. This allows for an incredibly diverse line-up, and on occasion for newcomers to book their very first proper show. Impromptu karaoke parties are sometimes thrown, and on the weekends you can find DJ sets, or even a tribute to 90s Acid House. Anton Newcombe could be spinning records or you may run into Depeche Mode, but Supersonic is way more than a rock-star hideout. This is a place where all genres are represented, from rockabilly to psychedelic rock, cold wave or synth pop. This diversity has led to the rebirth of the local scene after a series of clubs and bars closed down. Supersonic is where the crowd can often be found recharging after a full crowd-surfing “pogo” moment, eating hot dogs from a food truck and rinsing them down with local craft beer and red wine.
