SALVARE GOODS
GUIDED BY MUSIC
SALVARE GOODS
2439 Riverside Dr, Los Angeles, CA 90039

LOCATED AROUND THE CORNER FROM ZEBULON IS SALVARE GOODS, A VINTAGE DÉCOR AND FURNITURE SHOP WHICH OPENED IN 2014, ESSENTIALLY OUT OF NECESSITY. HUSBAND-AND-WIFE OWNERS SELINA BECKER AND SETH MEISTERMAN HAD ACCUMULATED SO MUCH HOUSEWARE THROUGH THEIR WORK IN ART DIRECTION AND SET DESIGN THAT, BECKER SAYS, “WE PRETTY MUCH HAD TO OPEN A SHOP JUST TO LIGHTEN THE LOAD”.

This was fortuitous for Frogtown, with Salvare finding space in a building just a few blocks away from the house where Becker’s mother was born. The community of artists and makers, that have long resided in the area, of course took to Salvare’s expertly selected offerings – vintage rugs, pottery, furnishings and other one-of-a-kind pieces sourced from estate sales, second-hand shops, historic buildings and other out-of-the-way locations throughout Southern California. Meisterman himself hand makes much of the store’s new pottery, and it is popular among Salvare’s clientele, which includes designers, set decorators, local artists and musicians, all looking to add unique touches to their home. “A while back I read a theory that handmade pottery – and I'd extend that to all handmade art and goods – reflects our humanity back at us,” Becker says. “Vintage pottery is the most popular thing we sell, so I guess that theory is right.”

When Becker and Meisterman aren’t at their shop, out on a buying trip or consulting on interior-design projects, they play in the band Bedroom Communities, meaning music also has a heavy presence at Salvare, with many buying trips surfacing vintage rock t-shirts and classic vinyl, which is in turn put up for sale, or just played on the store’s turntable. Lately, the soundtrack has consisted of a lot of 70s Nigerian guitar music, along with funk, Italian disco and records their parents loved, like those by David Bowie, The Kinks, The Pretenders, T. Rex, The Rolling Stones, Gerry Rafferty, Steely Dan and Faces. “Usually,” Becker says, “there's a guitar lying around too.”
